Killing the TCO

Sightlines Consulting , which I usually admire, today added to the depleted reputation of accountants. Casting us as IT numbnuts, the author said:

"software may work but was poorly implemented; client bought software after being advised by their accountant so they ended up with nothing more than debits and credits (accountants believe that this is the extent of ‘business’);"

And, after a convoluted and poorly framed argument, it concludes:

"We are as interested in the Total Cost of Ownership as anyone. That’s why we believe so passionately in on-demand, software as a services, like NetSuite: SaaS has such a great TCO compared to on-premise packages."

OK – so there are some Luddites out there: but…I was deeply unimpressed with these unsubstantiated statements. If you’re as ticked off as I was, then go visit and let them know what you think.

Tom - don't be embarrassed. It is a sad fact of life that many professionals are pretty poor at software selection, frequently taking the least line of resistance. As always with these things, it ain't what's said, but the way it's heard.

Dennis, Thanks for calling me out on this one. I don't usually let my emotions influence my writing, but in this post I clearly did. In fact I count several accountants as colleagues and advisers, so I was doubly embarrased to re-read my comments. It won't happen again. Tom
