All very interesting but would somebody explain to me (an idiot) what the hell IS Technorati?

I cannot get my head around it at all.

For a blog that began in September, that is very impressive. My ranking has been going up in bits: currently ranked at 55,132 though it wasn’t that long ago that it was in the millions …

It's not a traffic thing per se and that makes sense.

It's the number of links from different sites. It's a combination of the two. In a previous incarnation, I had bags of links but not many sites linking. Now I have less links but more sites linking and that is what has changed the positioning. Remember we're very much in the early stages of this stuff and the algorithms will change and improve to take into account other aspects of traffic. The important thing to realise it is not an absolute numbers game.

I'ld be interested to know how Technorati measure trust and authority. Website traffic is one thing, but trust and authority are not easily measured by a computer as they are subjective. If they have found a way then there must be some clever people at Technorati. I would guess it's something to do with high ranking sites linking to each other, but then again it's probably not as simple as that.
