Self-service, civil service style

Robert Adewunmi, an unqualified accountant employed as a troubleshooter in Two-Jags Prescott’s office has been banged up for 4 years after helping himself to £867,000 from the government’s coffers according to London View. His wife drew 6 months for aiding and abetting. As you might expect, the Conservatives pounced on this:

Caroline Spelman, Conservative shadow secretary for the ODPM, said: “This conviction is extremely serious. This raises yet more questions about John Prescott’s leadership.”

I’d be much more impressed if they pounced on government’s profligacy around its IT ‘investments’ and made some of that mud stick. I’d be even more impressed if London View could add up. The headline? ‘Civil servant jailed for £1 million fraud’…errr…no. But hey – if government can’t balance its books, should we be so harsh on those that report such matters?
