Process atrophy – the Sarbanes-Oxley effect

Sarbanes-Oxley may have been introduced as a way of combatting corporate abuse but evidence continues to emerge that it is stifling companies’ ability to sell goods and services. Today for instance, I received an email telling me that SOX compliance processes mean that a company with a really cool product they wish to bring to market has to appear in global price books and the global workforce has to be trained before it can be released to customers. Despite the fact that customers are asking to evaluate. How crappy is that?

I’m sure there’s a bit of over caution here but even so, is it really necessary to go this far? This isn’t about breaking rules but about common sense. Has SOX fostered a climate of fear? Has it encouraged companies to hang back rather than forge ahead? If so then it sucks. Big time.
