Clueless websites

A wonderful question about website updates sparked this interesting conversation. Here’s one person’s take:

I always ask clients how/why they have come to me and of nearly 200 NO ONE has ever come to me from seeing my website.

I actually dont think clients find accountants via websites, but I think they can build a certain perception about the accountant they are considering using.

It is therefore difficult to quantify what website expenditure is worthwhile.

Personally I really find the bog standard AVN websites etc SO boring. They have no individual flair – seen one seen them all!

Sorry to pinch the entire comment but it sums up so eloquently the reasons why clients don’t use professional websites. It also explains why the focus of most professional websites is so out of kilter with what today’s technology can deliver.

I’ve been chuntering about this for ages. And the solution is so very, very easy and cheap to get into. Make the site interactive by tying it to something like a blog engine. Give people a voice within the firm so they can reach out to clients and add value to their industries. Make your people accountable for the quality of relationship they foster within their communities of interest.

Not only would that change the game for you, it would make being a professional something that is enjoyable, fun, creative and valuable. I like your comment about the AVN websites.

Recently, I started up a conversation with a business owner, who seemed to be an excellent prospect. Stupidly, I referred them to my website. Only to discover that their existing accountant has an identical website. The only differences are the colour and the staff profiles.

Good one, Stuart!
