How free pays

Jeremy Ballenger has been pushing me into being more specific about how my blog business model works. Here’s a prime example of how ‘free’ pays. An editor of a mag I occasionally contribute to (very occasionally I might add!) pinged me an email asking about Skype. He’s on deadline (like NOW) and needed a bunch of sound bite type sentences covering the do’s and dont’s of Skype with a couple of advice pointers on its use in a corporate finance setting. It was a Q&A thing. It took me about 10 minutes. Done for free. Don’t even know if I’ll be attributed. Don’t care. Almost immediately, the editor pinged back saying:

> Star – that’s perfect.

>

> Big beers on me – and we should talk about your next proper commission,

> too – before Easter?

That’s one way free pays.

Oh yes – Jeremy describes me as ‘the cool accountant.’ Jeez – that’s NEVER happened before.

Being Australian, and I'm certain Ric will appreciate this, 'Big beers' is probably one of the best ways that free can pay ;-)

Thanks for a further example D.

"Cool" and "accountant" in the same sentence with a straight face - never thought I'd see it! But if anyone was going to do it ...
