Reading comments to Shel Israel’s discussion about corporate blogging, Scoble points to one of his Channel 9 videos with Don McGowan, a technology lawyer at Microsoft. These videos are internal Microsoft films Scoble makes that pretty much anyone can access. Usually I fight shy of these things as I see them as ultimately self-serving. But on this occasion at least, the recording is educational for ‘us.’
Apart from describing the kinds of work he’s involved in, don goes to great lengths to talk about the nature of being a lawyer and the need to understand a lot about how development works. This is exactly the same kind of thinking that has kept me twittering on about the need to get close to clients and engage in mutually meaningful conversations. A telling point is the idea that being a lawyer is about being a professional pessimist. Are ‘we’ like that?
The tape runs 49 minutes and 19 seconds os it’s the sort of thing to watch over lunch. But if you don’t have that time then the first 10 minutes are a must.
