Skills transfer value

in Cloud Computing/SaaS

One of the toughest jobs in practice is passing on book-keeping skills. Professionals spend years learning Dr/Cr for a reason. But if we want to deliver the best value for clients then we have to look on this element as ‘outsource training.’ You need clients to be successful in the mundane but necessary book-keeping so you can concentrate on the value add elements. And you need to be creative.

That’s why you need to know what the training package looks like when checking out SaaS vendor credentials. I can tell you they’re not all created equal by a country mile. If training’s only good for you then you either need a new provider or be prepared to build content for the end user client. I know which I prefer.

I've had two new clients go on to More lately and they've both used the videos to self-teach.

Winweb's excellent on-line chat help meant I taught myself to use the accounts part of their system with ease. However, I'm an ACA. I think they're currently considering their approach to training for clients - particularly those for whom a debit means a bank payment. I'm watching that space with interest.

I agree with Dennis. Many clients just need to be taught the simple procedures - inputting invoices, receipts and payments, and reconciling the bank.

Things like prepayments, accruals and journals will be beyond the understanding of a lot of clients - who after all, did not go into business to be accountants. That's our job.

True - I believe the training video thing is an approach being adopted by More.

Getting clients to use help screens, manuals and knowledge bases can be hard work. Most people want to speak to people they know and trust. The one area I do see potential benefits for is training videos. They are easy to watch and they can be stored on a website. Pointing your client to one of these must be preferable to pointing them to loads of boring text.

A big advantage of the SaaS approach is that you can see what your client is processing in real time. Try doing that when your client has a desktop application like QuickBooks. Both parties benefit. I never want to be on the telephone again to a client guessing what they are seeing on their screen.
