Technorati banned in China – minnows and elephants

Yesterday, Tom Raftery emailed me that Technorati is banned in China. Mad About Shanghai is talking about this as well. Why do I care enough to discuss this on an accounting professionals’ blog. Gawd knows Technorati can be painful. Of which more later. But. Very simple – in business relationships, understand who you are dealing with.

China is held up as the next global manufacturing economic powerhouse. (sic) Some of your clients might be thinking of outsourcing to China and you’re wondering how best to advise. When you hear stories like Tom’s reportage, it has to be a reason to pause for thought. Think the Suez crisis.

If accountants in the West are to be seen as responsible 21st century advisors in a diverse global economy then it is they who need to understand client expectations and how to deliver the service against those expectations. But hang on, isn’t that what we intuitively do when delivering advice? In context.

The importance of China’s should not be under estimated. At first, the Chinese government went after Google, Yahoo! Now it is after the relative minnows – the ones with influence,
