vyew – a free web-based collaboration tool – Webex Killer?

Vyew

Zoli just invited me to a session on vyew. It’s a Webex killer free web based collaboration tool. My immediate impression was: ‘How about it integrates to the Skype API?’

Zoli says he’s seen a presentation from a company that will add this type of functionality without requiring having to wait for the vyew developers to get hold of the API and then shoehorn Skype into vyew. If that’s for real then that’s impressive. No doubt Zoli will say more when he can.

So now we have an application that allows us to share directly with our business partners – machine to machine. With any application. Changes the online support game for those delivering services?

Better still, there is now a way where Hugh could share his designs with the Stormhoek people in real-time using his Tablet PC and vyew. You out there seeing this Hugh? So now distance is no barrier in sharing ideas, thoughts or providing customer assistance. That’s pretty awesome.

Hi there,

Thank you for posting on Vyew.com a while ago. As you may know, Vyew 2.0 is going to be released in mid-July.

Our up coming release 2.0 has some unique and very useful new features. For example, it can support multiple VyewBooks. These VyewBooks which can be divided by customers, projects, interest, and more can be saved and open. Additionally, you can now mix and match pages from various file types or layered them together inside the same VyewPage which makes Vyew even more powerful in a collaborative environment.

We can provide you a sneak preview of this new version should you be interested. Please email me at reza@vyew.com and I will be glad to send you the URL.

Sincerely,

Reza Gosal

Who says the blogs don't have influence? Just make sure it works reasonably well please, even if it is a bit slow. A bit of something solid now is OK with me.

Hello again. As a direct result of various conversations with some of you and on other blogs, I met with our team and we decided to push out a LIVE DESKTOP SHARING feature this week. This may not be as snappy as webex, we'll be looking at about 3 seconds between each screen refresh. But keep in mind this is a quick fix until our real release in 2 months.

Hello all. I am from the Vyew dev team. I appreciate your good and bad comments as we will take the bad as motiviation to get better. Manoj mentioned we do not support PPT, however, WE DO SUPPORT powerpoint. In VyewBook, Import a file and select a PPT.

Also, we didnt feel skype integration was much of a big deal since anybody that wants to integrate with skype must require their users to install a skype client anyways. so why not run skype then alt-tab over to Vyew... BUT if you all are saying it is a big deal to you, then we will do it.

I just trialled vyew. I can see possibilities of using it for sharing files with whiteboard features. I was very disappointed by SlydeShow as it is for sharing photographs and not for running ppt files nor it can be used for s/w demos.

When we are ready, we might subscribe to gotomeeting. I also concluded webex is too expensive and too bandwidth heavy

The FAQ contained an entry about sharing a live desktop, or rather not being able to. I can however see Vyew being of use in 'whiteboard' type situations, but not for application demonstration.

We use GoToMeeting, which we went for due to price. WebEx was very expensive by comparison and wanted to lock us into a contract, whether we used the services or not.

All systems have different pros and cons. Thankfully, there are enough out there such that a fit should be found for each situation.

I trialled both webex and gotomeeting. Whilst I managed to access the website of vyew, I cannot get it to work. Which is a shame as we urgently need to a tool to demonstrate ebdex Document Exchange remotely. According to Steve Checkley, vyew seems to have limitations.

One of my friends is currently in the process of launching a similar product that is tightly integrated with Skype, company is called yuuguu. I will do a feature later on my blog once I got an update from them.

Very interesting technology. Just signed up and testing it out, and the usability and presentation approach look very slick. When can Zoli tell us more about their future plans?

Once again Dennis introduces us to a new technology!

When Vyew gains the ability to share a live desktop rather than static screens, it'll be able to challenge WebEx and GoToMeeting on a new level.

When talking to people in the industry, it seems that WebEx's ability to brand its windows to suit the company who purchased its services is important to them. What put me off is their price in the UK - and it's more than what Vyew quotes on their site.

The other big bonus it appears to have is that it works with Macs, something I've yet to find with other systems.
