Dave Winer launched a nifty service over the weekend – Share Your OPML. TechCrunch and Steve Rubel have already talked about it. TechMeme is going crazy over it. I particular like Steve’s comment:
Today Share Your OPML is primarily for geeks. You can browse the community of largely tech influencers, see what feeds they read and what they have in common. Tomorrow, however, is a different story. I see it becoming a big social network for feeds. As it adds features and becomes more accessible to non-geeks, the community will grow, the network effect will kick in and so its value will increase.
I’ve already found that to be the case. I’ve been trying to find new material. I need to find sites that to date have been hidden from view. This service allows me to do that by working down the lists of others. I’m deliberately discounting the sites where there are many links because I probably know about them already. I’m more interested in the sites that only have one or two links. That’s how I find really interesting things.
So here’s what I’d like as an extra to what Dave’s already done – I’d like to see the strap line for the site. That way I get an instant flavour of what they’re about. Maybe a category system built on tags.
People seem to be joining this service at a fair clip. When I first registered, I was listed at no. 44 in the Most Prolific Subscriber. When I refreshed the screen, I’d dropped to no. 69.
If you want to check out my feeds then click this Share Your OPML link. Over time, I’ will split the file into different types so that folk can pick and mix according to what’s of greatest interest.
