DabbleDB doesn't add up…either way

Don't Add Up

Following on from my last post about DabbleDB I finally grasped how formulae work from the video Avi created (see Avi’s comment at my last post and follow back to his post about my previous problem – sorry if that sounds confusing.)

I continued with my wee billing control app. The screenshot is above and when you click it, it will download a graphic image.

Notice there’s no value in the Billed column of the highlighted JJ row. The result is the Billed-WIP row for that entry is incorrect. That’s pretty important because the cross-cast is also wrong. In a live situation that could lead to all sorts of confusion.

At this point, DabbleDB is failing to meet two of Kleiner Perkins/Jeff Clavier’s criteria for investment:

  • Instant value to the user
  • Simple, intuitive user experience

I’m glad I caveated my first take on this. It’s running downhill for me at this point. To put it into business perspective:

  • There are about 20,000 firms of accountants in the UK.
  • Roughly 480,000 businesses set up each year.
  • Many need little more than a spreadsheet/database for their most basic accounting functions.
  • It would be great to have a shareable app like this for at least some record keeping.

I hoped DabbleDB might just fit the bill as there are few realistic alternatives without requiring a decent amount of training. As it is, DabbleDB would add to the record keeping nightmare many professional firms face.

If the DabbleDB boys think this will fly on the consumer front then they are sadly mistaken. On the business front – it’s dead in the water (as it stands.) But don’t lose heart. It’s not that many years ago that Oracle had similar problems in its warehousing app.

Hi Dennis,

I continue to drop in and enjoy your posts. Sometimes they are just not in my area but much of what you say overlaps and so I patiently await those ones.

Something that does hurt me as a reader is that you use lots of specialised vonacular. If you could at least use the tag so that I can figure out what the intent is and then if I still don't get it at least I can search it.

After all what does GP mean? General Practitioner? Graduate professional? Giant Pig?

I have the same problem but I try to use Acronym as often as possible so I don't alienate anyone.

This comment will be posted somewhere else too just to increase the likely hood of your picking it up.

Cheers,
Roger

Avi - trust me, I did think about filing a bug report but chose not to because this is too serious at ANY level - IMO. FYI - I've been at this app for just shy of 4 hours now.

Forget whether I think it could make an accounts app - I know its a GP database. That's not the point and I never said accounts is what I expect. I said it is what I hoped. Very different. The app I was trying to build is a piece of a GP app for any service business.

This is/was a pretty fundamental SNAFU to me and points to functional testing quality.

Look through what I've said over my posts - I WANT you guys to succeed but I can't and won't ignore this type of thing because it's not fair on MY readers who have certain expectations of the quality I pass on in my posts because mine is a business blog.

That's why my earlier post was entitled: Am I Thick? In case I was missing something basic - which I was.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for pointing out that bug (it's easier for us if you file bug reports using the feedback link inside the app). Try a reload; it should be fixed now.

I'm sorry to hear things are running downhill for you. We don't claim to be an accounting solution by any means (that's one of the things spreadsheets *are* good for), but it seems like the issues you're running into are minor enough that they could be fixed with a little constructive discussion. You know where to reach us; we'd love to hear more.

Regards,
Avi
