Richard Murphy gets serious

Little more than a week after Richard Murphy set up his TaxResearch blog, he’s moved platforms from WordPress.com to his own hosted service. Who cares? I do and so should you. In his email to me, Richard says he’s getting serious about this blogging thing. Why?

Because in the few days after he got it running, he’s getting a nice flow of traffic plus email from interesting places. I’m sure once he studies his site stats, he’ll get even more serious :)

If you’re going to take this stuff seriously then a platform that delivers what you need now and into the future is crucial. Having a measure of control over the platform is a necessary first step. It also means you have to get a bit geeky about these things but…no pain, no gain and think of the experience you gain that can be used to help clients?

As an aside, Charlene Li at Forrester provides an overview of blogging platforms. I’ve tried most of those she mentions. I have my own take (tomorrow.) Mine’s free, her detailed take costs an eye watering $1,995. That’s $133 per page or $67 per interview. Your choice as to whether you think the alternative ‘free’ is worth the attention.

Thomas, I switched from hosted by wordpress to hosted by a hosting company. I set it up in a breeze (over the week-end) and I have no knowledge whatsoever of hosting or running databases. I am not even in the IT business. A Noob, some would say.

I recommend you switch earlier rather than later. Paul Stamatiou convinced me with two posts on his blog. Check-out: http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/05/14/how-to-start-b... and http://paulstamatiou.com/2005/11/03/how-to-boost-y... to see why.

I'll "buy" yours Dennis. Your recent challenges with databases and so on mean that you can talk from experience.

My blog is currently hosted by wordpress, and I'm happy with it for now. I'm not sure I want the hassle yet of playing DBA and the like. (I almost sound like a SaaS salesperson !-) )
