SAP CEO's hilarious quote

in Cloud Computing/SaaS

Stuart Jones tells me that SAP Henning Kagermann was quoted in Monday’s FT as saying:

… it will take a while for people to offer free accounting on the web

Now I KNOW he doesn’t read my blog but for the benefit of all you SAPpers out there that do – have a whip round and please give Henning a new telescope. And while you’re at it: point him to WinWeb, the UK’s fast growing FREE accounting SaaS provider. It has around 10,000 registered users.

The future’s here…but not very well distributed it seems.

UPDATE: The FT online version (sub required) doesn’t carry the quote. It has a better one:

“You influence people less by talking to them,” he says of running SAP, “than through what you do.”

Doing things is always important but Henning: – ever heard of the idea that markets are conversations? Oh well. Can someone double up that request and get a pair of binoculars as well? And could tech support fix Henning’s laptop with Technorati as the home page? Or maybe fix him up with an RSS reader with all the SAP bloggers in it. Classic cluelessness.

PS: A reader who will remain anonymous pinged me an email: Vorsprung durch ignorance !!

PPS: Shel Israel pinged me saying: “Actually, I’m reading this right now, while snorkeling off of Molakai (Hawaiian islands) on my underwater computer, using EVDO technology.”

PPPS: Thomas Otter responds in robust manner to which I’ve commented. For some reason trackback hasn’t worked for him (would have if he’d use WordPress – so much for standards of interoperability :) ) so I’m linking directly from here. I didn’t say in my comment to Thomas’s thoughts but in email: my choice of weapon? Handbags – but only if my second gets to hold the pram for me.

No multi-user freebies (yet) but you never know...see you at TechED Jason?

Nice work, but don't you reckon Kagermanm was referring to multi-user accounting, rather than single user? Given SAP's focus, I would have thought this was the case, and from what limited knowldge I have of WinWeb I thought if you want more than a single user license then it's not free. Maybe he should have said "it will take a while for people to offer free multi-user accounting on the web" or words to that effect? Or can you get that free too?
Nice one curmudgeon ;-)

Oh, well, McKinsey is even worse, questioning accounting on the web at all, free or $$$ :-)

I have sent a copy of your article to SAP for the attention of Henning Kagermann.

WordReference describes a "man of deeds" as someone inclined to act first and think later. Seems to fit the bill.

"A man of words, and not of deeds, is like a garden full of weeds." - Mother Goose.

We should take heed.

Someone slap him upside of the head with a clue stick!

I came across this post while I was browsing through Technorati. I just wanted to leave a comment to say that I'm not an accountant but even I know about things like WinWeb!!! That guy definitely needs to get a clue.
