Investing in people

July 28, 2006 Tax and Ethics

Finding the right people is hard enough – check out what Jim Holincheck has to say about recruitment requisitioning among large companies and just how hard it is for them to figure out how to do it…. The nub of John’s approach is to be ‘always recruiting:’ …where we’re constantly on the lookout for talented individuals with spark, passion, creativity and vision – even if no role currently exists for them.

Next generation employees – Always On

July 28, 2006 General

For me, it is Jeff Nolan who comes up with the sharpest views and more interesting questions: I would have liked to see some discussion about how Generation M entering the workforce is going to force changes on the systems that we deploy and how we build them…. Potential employees can get a flavour of what it means to join his firm from reading his blog and the firm’s ethos by clicking through to the main site.

Ignore the competition

July 27, 2006 Innovation

And, as Clay Christensen has pointed out, when you get your first “hey, where the f*** did you put that?”… Tom Guariello Which made me think about how professionals obsess about the guy down the road who’s maybe shaving a few quid off client fee notes.

Open source procurement – accounting's obvious bed fellow

July 27, 2006 Innovation

They’re natural bedfellows because procurement delivers value across the organisation while giving finance departments spend comfort. But before the vendors go off in a tizzy, Coupa isn’t free in the sense you will need implementation services.

Mutton dressed as lamb?

July 27, 2006 Marketing

In making API access open and free, SF.com is saying to customers: ‘We know there’s no one-size fits all and we’re not going to pretend that’s the case…. The Coughlan test, Stephen Lawrence and media's social value

July 27, 2006 General

For US readers not familiar with the case, Stephen was murdered by a racist gang some 13 years ago. No-one has ever been brought to justice for this most hateful crime despite repeated attempts by the police and Stephen’s family plus a public enquiry. The programme made the shocking revelation that a named police officer corrupted the investigation from the get go this making it almost impossible for Stephen’s family to receive justice.

Theory matters

July 27, 2006 Marketing

Most of the folk who talk to me offline are departmentally aligned to marketing but I confess I don’t know what they do, how they’re measured or their contribution to business value…. OK – but I have to sell ideas to real people in real businesses where real money is at stake in places they and their peers call markets.

Tax investigation reality check

July 26, 2006 General

Rebecca Bennyworth (sorry – walled garden stuff) puts forward a well thought out response to the current UK compliance regime/climate. For me Rebecca hits the nail bang on where she says: The relationship we must consider, therefore, is between agents as a group and the tax authority.
