Exactly a week after the shit hit the fan at TechCrunchUK and we have Sam Sethi, along with Mike Butcher launching a new title, Vecosys – tracking European startups. Not quite in-line with the Biblical reference and the wrong season (let’s not go there) but reasonably close if totally predictable.
Curiously, this all happened in stealth mode while most of the world wasn’t paying attention. But then Sam’s got an impressive Rolodex. Leaving a cheeky comment on TCUK’s original site while most folks are curled up in bed is a top class stunt. And a well executed drop kick in the proverbials for Mike Arrington that Jonny Wilkinson would be proud of.
Personally, I can’t wait to see if there will be any lawyering up. Given Mike Arrington’s a lawyer, when he sees Sam already has sponsors he might start reaching deep into his email. But he’s not the only one with deep pockets. Sam’s no slouch in the money stakes.
Even more bizarre, right about the time Sam launched, he and I were in an email conversation that includes stuff that might turn out interesting for us both and our respective audiences. More on this later.
Go to it people. Is this the first of a possible series of breakaways? OK – too much speculation first thing in the morning is a bit much.
In the meantime, congratulations to Sam and Mike for coming up with something I personally think will make a terrific complement to the startup scene.
PS – Marc Canter thinks Sam is an asshole. It’s a funny story.
