Jason Busch is incandescent with rage over his attempted Vista/Outlook 2007 install/migration on a shiny new $2,800 Dell laptop. Note – Jason is a tech head:
Hey, category managers in charge of IT spend. Want to make yourself a friend of the business for life? I’ve got a secret for you: don’t rubberstamp your CIO’s decision to upgrade to Vista or Office 2007. In fact, tack on a big “reject†to the request or the requisition. And don’t do it to save money. Do it to save your hide.
It seems that Microsoft has successfully lowered its own bar in the performance shootout between Office and Google. Jason is not alone.
Unfortunately, the most effective advice for those suffering from slow Outlook 2007 installations seems to be: reduce the size of your mailbox.
While there may be good organizational reasons for doing this, it seems odd that it is needed on today’s machines, with vast amounts of RAM and disk space, and unspeakably fast CPUs. And if you use Exchange, be sure that you archive to a server location, otherwise you can end up with several little archives littered over every machine you use, and they likely will not be backed up.
WTF? And from an earlier post:
Nobody can afford to waste 2 hours a day on slow software.
I realise that not every Outlook 2007 user is affected – just the ones with the largest mailboxes. These are the people who use Outlook most intensively. Microsoft should give this urgent attention.
If this situation persists, then it is going to turn into a migraine for Microsoft.
Steve Ballmer already thinks analysts predictions for Vista sales are over hyped. I wonder however what Dell has to say? They offer an installation service for Vista so presumably they know how to tweak it. Or is it an Outlook specific issue? Who knows. More important for users, who cares?
I am pleased to report no such problems. But then I’m a Mac Bigot. -:)
UPDATE: Tom Raftery is reporting about related Vista issues.
