Michael Izza speaks

Thanks to an as yet unidentified young accountant simply known as David we can all read the thoughts of Michael Izza, CEO at ICAEW. If ever there was a reason to get an RSS feed reader, this is it. Having said that, the feed is flaky. Those outside the ICAEW paywall cannot comment directly but can send questions via email: chiefexecutive@icaew.com

Here’s a few snippets and my observations:

23/2 entry:

The sense of community that we have in our profession is important – and so we shouldn’t take it for granted.

There was a lot of discussion about how we can encourage more members to get involved in their professional body and, in particularly, with their district societies. This comes down to two questions – is it important to you that the ICAEW is run by the members for the members and if so, what part do you think you should play in that?

I’m not sure whether Michael knows about the 1/9/90 rule. If not then he should. There will always be the 1% of passionate people who really want to see meaningful progress. They engage the next 9% who do the heavy lifting work and who make useful suggestions. The 90% follow on but that doesn’t mean to say they won’t transmogrify into the other groups. As an aside, I have a feeling Ken Frost might have something to add.

8/2 entry:

If you can send me examples of how changes in HMRC have affected your ability to do business or have affected the businesses you work with I will feed these in to HMRC.

Oh dear. Has Michael not read some of the posts made by Simon Sweetman, Nicola Ross Martin, Dan Martin or Richard Murphy? Or the comments? If Michael is serious about this then here’s a drop dead simple tip. Implement WordPress MU. Note the reference sites. There’s a bit more to it than that but there are plenty of folk out ‘here’ who can provide solid suggestions.

31/1 entry:

Our role is to help our clients pay the right amount of tax that they owe by law – and it’s easier to do this in a system that is clear, transparent and easy to understand. We should be working with government to find practical ways to reduce the complexity.

Has Michael been reading Richard?

I’m really pleased that Michael is having a go. At least we know the man is human and I can see he has the interests of members at heart. That matters enormously to a profession I see as under seige. There’s nothing overly contentious in what he’s said to date and so I see no reason to hide behind the ICAEW paywall.

Comment moderation and a sensible blog policy will go a long way to solving perceived issues. The fact that members are engaging tells me there is demand. But you have to sell this service just like you do any other. Viral will take you so far but it needs more for a community not used to speaking out.

I believe there is massive potential locked up behind the walls of the Moorgate bunker. Correspondents tell me about the many really smart people who are trying to bring change. This is but one mechanism for exposing and discovering value. I happen to believe it is a very powerful medium. I’m sure Michael knows that. Be brave. Go public. You’ve everything to gain and very little to lose. More important, the members deserve this.
