This from Redmonk’s site:
All of us at RedMonk are very grateful to all of our clients for their continuing contributions. Without their financial support, we would be unable to bring you the free-as-in-beer content that we do.
We also count ourselves as very lucky to have found a sizable and growing customer base that understands that research may occasionally reveal their weaknesses, that commissioned research that speaks of products in glowing terms is of limited value, that openness trumps select access. That understands RedMonk, in other words.
We would not be here without them, and if you get the chance feel free to thank these fine folks for their patronage.
I know James very well – we spar from time to time. James is a sensitive soul and gets pissed very quickly at my barbs. No offence meant. I’ve met Stephen fleetingly and I really want to meet Cote.
Bottom line – although I characterise Redmonk as sell side (and you should be the judges of whether that colours your opinion), Redmonk tries harder than most other analyst firms to be honest brokers and present a balanced picture of how current thinking in technology impacts our lives.
Even if you don’t understand everything James says at least understand his sincerity. In a world where attention is a valuable commodity, James’ opinions are absolutely worth your attention.
