Pointless, misleading, tacky, wasteful

Sage’s latest marketing wheeze can only be described as…pointless, misleading, tacky and wasteful. It is pointless because business people would be daft to think a software provider can provide financial advice, except when it’s in their interests to do so. Here’s an example on budgeting:

If you sign up for any service, it is not free because you are giving out information. That has an attention cost. That makes it misleading. Even if you don’t agree with that statement then what about this pearl of wisdom:

If you are running an established business you should always refer to previous budget history, as this will enable you to not only identify actual costs and revenues but also any trends in income and expenditure.

That’s factually incorrect.

Tacky – what business person is going to sign up for ‘advice’ in the expectation of ‘winning’ M&S vouchers? To whom is that meant to appeal? What’s wrong with giving away software instead?

It’s also a waste of Sage customer’s money because marketing spend has to be recovered from software sales and maintenance revenue.

Tertiary Opinions - the advice you've given makes a lot of sense. Alan - is it surprising then that people want to set up third party maintenance operations?

I am not sure whether this is stupidity or arrogance on the part of Sage, but it sure is breathtaking.

Here they are feigning corporate largesse with offers of free business and software information while we have it on good authority that they won't even tell paying customers how to operate workarounds for failings in their products unless the customer takes out SageCover.

A recent convert to Liberty Accounts had access to Sage Instant Accounts and Sage Line 50 and wanted to know how they dealt with the Flat Rate VAT scheme. They called Sage only to be told that it has no built in handling of Flat Rate VAT (no surprise there then) but there was a workaround. The explanation of the workaround is on the Sage website but they will only give you access if you have SageCover.

Sage claim to have won awards for customer service, I didn't realise they still gave out the Iron Cross.

As MD of Liberty Accounts online accounting software I should be pleased at this sort of thing but it actually makes me extremely angry because once again a big corporation is taking the mickey with hard working UK SME's.

I have to say that Sage's policy of wallpapering accountants' offices with newsletters and sales patter doesn't grab me...
