I’ve no idea how I ended with a link from AccountingWeb but the story is about Accountants’ Power Tools a to pay for service. Kevin (site owner) – do me a favour please – remove the link to my site please. Here’s why:
Kevin Salter has assumed that professionals want to know about every bit and piece of technology out there. Even I know that’s not true and I’m probably one of the world’s worst accounting tech junkies. Asking readers to fork over £5 a month may seem like a pittance but where’s the value for stuff you can get for free anyway? The ever insightful Nigel Harris has the answer:
Being a monthly service you will receive details of all the latest tips and tools as they become available
Spot the deliberate mistake? Or how about this gem:
So the concept is: subscribe to Accountant’s Power Tools, and every month Kevin Salter will buy all the computer magazines and scour the net for you and present just the useful bits
Hasn’t Nigel heard about TechCrunch, Gizmodo, Vecosys or Engadget? How about the Excel Add-On Site or Smith on VoIP? The list could go on. Have recent reports from the US about the closure of InfoWorld passed him by? I know professionals are not the first to embrace technology but there’s something here that both Kevin and Nigel are missing. Information wants to be free. He’s not providing any reviews just a link. And finally, just to show how clued up our Kev is – check this:
Simply complete the standing order mandate and application form and post it to us. For faster access, fax it or email it and we will set you up immediately whilst the signed mandate is in the “snail mail†to us.
PayPal anyone?
I am genuinely annoyed that professionals should be treated in such a cynical fashion. Everyone I know understands that if you want to find something then you search first on the Internet – not wait a month for something to turn up. You sure as heck don’t pay for the pleasure on the off chance that something you want will be included.
Today’s information discovery model is entirely different. It is predicated on the idea of information on-demand, discoverable by search and/or using increasingly sophisticated RSS tools like Grazr.
Bottom line – Accountants Power Tools is a ripoff. You don’t need to pay to get any of the information Kevin is putting out.
