Understanding Smartsheet

I first saw Smartsheet last October. Since then it has won the Under The Radar 2007 best in show award. Immediately prior, Robert Scoble recorded a 16 minute video with Mark Mader, Smartsheet’s president. I recommend watching the show because Mark makes many of the important points about how community working can bring real effectiveness in the workplace.

The main examples he quotes are in the HR arena. Since this is one that often falls within the purview of the finance leader’s office, I thought this might provide food for thought.

One really noteworthy quote from Robert and Mark’s response:

Robert: If I’m hanging out in San Francisco a lot of people aren’t using Office anymore…I get on a plane where I am sitting next to a guy who’s got Windows 2000 and is using Excel and PowerPoint…How do you get them to switch?”

Mark: You don’t…we’re additive.

Note: I’ve edited the words to condense and get to the essence of the meaning.

Endnote: When Robert first went into video podcasting at PodTech I was sceptical as to whether he could pull it off. In some areas, he’s not great but in the Office productivity area, he’s very close to nailing it. He asks all the types of question I, as a user want answers to. Cut out the analyst, the expert, the marketer, the case study guy, the press for chrissakes…sounds like good value to me.

I wouldn't have the email removed, rather have a preferences that allows one to use a feed/rss/atom rather than email for changes etc..

The email thing is essential for their audience but otherwise I agree.

I really like Smartsheet when I tried this a while back. The only real issues I had with it were : It's very email centric, and my email isn't the best way to get my attention, particularly for collaborative changees. On this front RSS would be a great feature, unfortunately there wasn't any RSS support built in. One other feature I now consider essential is an API for each service and this was also missing. I am hoping they can fix these issues, that will certainly mean it becomes part of my everyday services.

regards
Al
