The penny dropped at OpenCoffee Manchester

Little things mean a lot when you’re trying to do something innovative. At the end of a long and frustrating day, it was nice to read Graham Salmon’s experience of OpenCoffee Manchester:

As an accountant I need to do two things:

  • Make sure my clients know what’s going on and what’s available, and
  • Deliver accountancy services that are going to meet the demands of a 21st century business. Online accounting would be a start.

Yes it will Graham – because that’s the direction clients are going. But then I guess you figured that out a long time ago. -:)

1 I think we'll probably find out soon enough! (There are a number of ex KPMG people at B&S so that may be a start)
2 One area that springs to mind is getting startups to register with all the government's online filing gateways - eg HMRC, Companies House. Makes life easier from the start! Another is the development of reliable forecasting models to get clients to understand the scale of their future businesses. (I know Web 2.0 startups are not as demanding on investment capital as the dot commers, but that doesn't mean that funding and capital will not become an issue).
3 No immediate thoughts but online payment systems (for outgoing & incoming)are going to be the order of the day.

The fun has only just begun..

Thanks for sharing that Graham. It raises interesting questions:
1. Is there a way in which B&S + KPMG could cooperate to facilitate what is needed to provide the appropriate level of services require for startups?
2. What kinds of services do startups need that don't simply centre on keeping a good set of books?
3. How might professionals foster good practice on the issues of cashflow management? (I have something in mind here for the kinds of contractor that are commonly found in service industries)

That's a start...

I did. Big thanks to Manoj. Will be interesting to see if KPMG and Beever & Struthers can take up the mantel on behalf of the profession in Manchester.
