Vodafone roaming charges – ouch!

by admin on July 30, 2007

I received my first Vodafone (Spain) bill to include my GPRS plan. In the billing month, I’d been to Ireland, UK and Denmark. What a shocker! Excluding tax, the charges tipped in at €125 with voice charges coming in at another €73. All plus tax at 16%. That’s a grand total of: €230.

Bear in mind that Vodafone UK and ES are essentially the same company and there’s no concession on those charges you can imagine that I am pretty cheesed off.

Oh – and let’s not forget the hotel wifi access charges while I was away.

Does anyone else agree with me that if you do travel outside your own country then telecoms charges feel like date rape?

I’m traveling to the UK next week. I’ll be using GPRS VERY sparingly.

Couldn't agree more – when I walked The Camino in Spain my GPRS bill was a lot more than the food and accommodation costs. Maybe we should implement a SIM card sharing scheme. With Tmobile and 3 here in the UK you can have unlimited GPRS for a few pounds a month.

Seems all of the networks are as bad as one another. Here's a cautionary tale from a T-Mobile customer.

Yes when you consider that countries like Australia and the US don't charge exorbidant fees for 'roaming' from east to west it is very hard to see why the EU telecoms can do the same. The EU is similar in size to both the US and Australia. Can't wait for the proposed legislation to come into effect.
Anyone know how SE-Asia (Sing / HK / Malaysia etc) handles this?
