Skype – you're royally pissing me off

in General

I rely on Skype for communications. They get my money in preference to Telefonica and up until yesterday they provided a good enough service. Not quite up to POTs standards but good enough. The service went down yesterday for reasons that remain unclear. The peer to peer network as not been available all day (its’ now 1630 CET). They say SkypeOut is working – it isn’t. It’s a shambles.

As Larry Dignan says:

Whether Skype’s outage was due to an exploit or an algorithm doesn’t really matter. What matters is there were small businesses that actually depended on Skype and were let down. I’d certainly think twice before relying on Skype.

It’s not so many years ago that the smallest storm would routinely knock out the Spanish phone system in our area. Today, we take it for granted that it will just work. Today, Skype is like Spain was: unreliable. The big question now is what will they do to compensate those who don’t have a landline but rely on Skype.

I am really annoyed by this too... I recently just moved to a brand new city and decided to be without a phone landline in my apartment to totally rely on Skype to keep in touch with family and friends.

I actually signed up for Skype Credit this Monday, and everything was working good until the last 2 days where I've been unable to log into Skype and make my calls. Instead I had to rely on using my cellphone and perhaps incurring even more outrageous long-distance and roaming charges.

Boo to Skype and their lack of communication too.. It was only a link a friend sent me to their "Skype Heartbeat" where I was finally confirmed that there was actually something wrong from their end.

I seriously think this disruption is going to bite them back really hard.. A lot of users and small business rely on their pay service, and I think some might look twice now about ever continuing with them. I know I am looking into just signing myself up to a damn long-distance plan through my cellphone now instead of using Skype.
