We want your views – ICAEW

in General

The Small Practice Accountant has been contacted by Gracechurch Consulting with a view to getting its views on the ‘attitudes and requirements’ of professionals in practice as part of a piece of research it is undertaking on ICAEW’s behalf. Damian Wild comments:

Credit where credit’s due though, chief executive Michael Izza pledged to listen when he took office and this is tangible evidence of that.

Damian is way too kind. Too often, this kind of thing happens behind closed doors. IMO – the results should be made public and members should also receive assurances the Institute will act upon the things it finds. If it does that THEN members and the public will be impressed.

If you’re a small practitioner and have been included in the survey cadre then I would urge you to give Gracechurch full and complete answers. If you’ve not been included not then I see no reason why you should not volunteer to be included.

My own anecdotal research indicates there is a great deal of unhappiness within the membership at many levels. And I’m not just thinking of Ken Frost.

The phone survey follows on from the web based member surtvey that was publicised in the April issue of Accountancy. (I can't find a link now so guess it's finished)

I replied to it and sent a follow up note to Michael Izza as I felt it was a good effort but flawed in various places. I explained my thinking and was impressed to receive a call back from the new head of Communications who took my constructive criticisms on board. I have high hopes.

I resisted the invitation to provide further input to the survey as by then I'd already invested over an hour on the web based survey and follow up email/call.

Fingers crossed. I have every confidence that Michael and his team are keen to listen and take on board concerns and criticisms.

Agreed

But it does not then obviate the need for thinking by those who commissioned the report

I have to bite my tongue because I am aware of certain things going on inside ICAEW that might pleasantly surprise members. Having said that, RM's point is well taken and one that is certainly worth articulating. IMO.

Even so, any work ICAEW does that allows them to know what the grass roots SMB practitioner thinks (which is predictable anyway but always more powerful when it comes from a 3rd party) should at least be given a cautious welcome.

Gracechurch's reply:

Dear Stuart

I hear you contacted Gracechurch this morning to ask to be included in the piece of research that we are doing for the ICAEW? I also note that you are not around today, so thought I would email you to arrange a time.

Would either tomorrow at 3pm (Sept 6) or 10am on Friday (Sept 7) suit? As you will have seen from the ICAEW email, the conversation should take between 30 and 45 minutes maximum.

I hope one of these times is convenient and I look forward to talking to you.

All the best

Does anyone have the ICAEW e-mail?

Stuart

Well, I'm a great fan of Yorkshire as a holiday destination (which will upset you), but as an East Anglian Irishman am not aware of any other ties.

But I'm amused all the same

So I can't be from Yorkshire :-)

Richard Murphy

I have just phoned Gracechurch Consulting and they have added my mane to the survey. It's a telephone survey so I shall have to think on my ar*efeet.

Richard I agree with your comments but the first few paragraphs made me think you're a Yorkshireman!

you cannot get an ought from an is

Is this similar to?:
You don't get owt for nowt

I always despair at this sought of approach to setting strategy.

Has no one at the ICAEW heard of the naturalistic fallacy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalistic_fallacy

In effect this says you cannot get an ought from an is. In other words asking what is the case will not tell you what ought to be the case. The styles of thinking ae different.

Of course accountants are good at what ‘is’. That involves counting things like responses to surveys. What they’re very bad at is working out what this means.

If the ICAEW wants to know where to go then another methodology is needed. Try thinking for a start. Try thinking about the ideal role of the accountant in society. Try matching where we are to where we might be if we are to meet that need as the basis of a strategic plan after that. Then we might make progress. That’s developing a map.

But just knowing where we are offers us no route to anywhere.

Richard Murphy

I have sent them an e-mail asking to take part in the survey. I'll let you know what they say.

Those are questions you are perfectly entitled to ask. Please keep 'us' informed.

It would be good to know the scope of this enquiry, and exactly how many will be interviewed, I don’t suppose they’ll tell me on the phone.

Now, I need to go and make a list of items to mention so I don’t forget anything.
