Happy birthday to my blog: 2 years old

by admin on September 7, 2007

in General

This is almost certainly the last post I’ll get done before the weekend so I may as well wrap up on a high.

Come Monday, this blog will be 2 years old and a lot has changed in that period. First some stats:

  • 2,199 blog posts (for some reason WordPress thinks it is 2,350 and while I have deleted a few in draft stage plus the odd duplicated item, it sure as heck isn’t 10%)
  • 4,013 blog comments
  • 166,205 spam comments
  • 242,143 direct page views (ex-RSS)
  • 758 daily RSS subscribers, averaging something around 1,100-1,200 folks a day turning up one way or the other.

The site has been through at least four design iterations and the current one is the most long lived having survived since January 1st, 2007. It has a global audience with roughly 40% UK, 35% US and the rest spread among at least 25 other countries.

Personally?

  • I’ve been privileged to meet some of the nicest, smartest, most generous people I have ever known. I’ve met a lot more people ‘virtually.’ It is a surprisingly kind world out there.
  • I’ve learned an enormous amount of new ‘stuff’ along the way, a lot of which I’ve been able to put into direct practice with clients. I continue to learn.
  • In the early days, I was obsessed with traffic, now I don’t worry too much. The people who are supposed to turn up do so.
  • A lot of ‘old’ things haven’t changed and provide plenty of fuel with which to support the little guy battling against ‘the man.’
  • This blog has gone from being a personal ‘rant and rave’ place to one that not only gives me pleasure but has become a modest revenue generator in its own right.
  • As a direct result of this blog I am now a part owner in a start up, have a gig at ZD Net, am engaged on a massive project I wish I could talk about but can’t and am regularly invited to vendor briefings and events.
  • In many ways it feels like ‘the old days’ as a hack except that this time around I’m my own publisher – which is a bizarre sensation.
  • I have a few regrets but nearly all are about the way I’ve said something rather than making totally embarrassing cock-ups.
  • And for those that inquire – yes – I do sleep. Spanish siesta works well for me.

Bottom line: I’m having the time of my life.

Thanks all for coming by. Let’s keep the conversations going.

...and long may it last. Congratulations Dennis.

Great content that is challenging and thought provoking. If I had to list my favourite blogs your one would be at the top.

Philip

Woooohooo! Congratulations, Dennis! This is certainly some serious achievement! I only got to know you a bit better in the last few weeks, but have been following your blogs and they are now an essential daily read to me and anyone who wants to find out some more on what's happening in the industry. So, as far as I can see, keep up the superb piece of work! And here is to another 5 years of some serious blogging!

Congrats again, Dennis! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to keep thinking ahead of the curve!

keep it coming Dennis,
happy blog birthday.

Happy B-day. You've not only inspired but also entertained and certainly challenged my thinking. Thanks.

@everyone: thanks for your support, it fills me with hope. To @Richard - we've had our ups and downs and I will not always agree but we remain good pals. @Vinnie: you've been a tower of strength for which I can never repay. Love you bro'

Sounds crass but I feel blessed (in a totally non-religious sense) to have support from like minded people who care about the profession and its future.

I am envious of the 2 to 1 ratio of comments to posts...that is the ultimtae compliment - people who care enough to agree, and hopefully disagree with you...but they read your stuff...

oh and btw, I will be envious of your start up payoff too...

here's wishing you all the success, old man!

Keep up the good work. You represent the future of IT within business, someone with a passion for their own field of expertise but who also embraces IT technology as a partner; as an enabler not as an annoyance.

Tom

Other than the Economist, this blog is about the only thing I'd call an essential read.

Dennis

You don't mention it, but I will

You've inspired a lot of people over the last couple of years

I wouldn't be blogging but for your inspiration

Thanks, and here's to the next 2 (and more)

Richard Murphy

Congratulations! Keep it up!
