Microsoft isn’t shy when it comes to protecting its franchise. Today’s offer of $60 for Office to students in the US, Canada and the UK extending to Spain Italy and France on 20th September is the latest salvo in its impending war with the likes of Google, Zoho and OpenOffice. As you might imagine, it’s all over the blogs.
Tom Raftery nails it when he asserts:
Even if Microsoft succeed in getting students to buy-in to Office Ultimate, it is painless to leave Office because the alternatives are free! With that in mind, even $60 seems a lot to ask – Microsoft are going to have to change their business model eventually.
The promotion is slated to run through April 2008. I have a sneaking suspicion it will run and run.
