Video blogging is evolving rapidly

Dailymotion-1

I’ve spent a lot of time these last couple of months watching and participating in video blogs. They’re a great idea and there’s a lot of experimentation going on. Until recently I’d not heard of Daily Motion. That was until Loren Feldman started talking about them.

Packed with features and of excellent quality, Daily Motion deserves a lot more attention than it gets. Here’s a few things you can do with it:

  • Post a video directly to your own blog
  • Reasonably detailed profile information
  • Create and join groups on topics of interest – more important, you can leave groups if your interest wanes
  • Group moderation for submissions – helps keep it ‘clean’
  • Create a channel to which you can add people and content
  • Create a video wall – Loren has used this feature to provide a critique of Seesmic but other uses might include a course of training, reactions to events… the list goes on. I’m using it to create content for FreeAgent

A few things I’d like to see:

More detailed profile information which could be used to ensure that group content is correctly targeted.

Improved upload speeds. This could be a function of my broadband connection but the service can be slow

Automatic selection of the input device – it’s a drudge having to select each time

An AIR client like Twhirl which is used for Twitter. That way I could see what is coming in, selected across a number of alternatives like all video, my channel, my group etc. Someone is developing an AIR client for Seesmic. This provides a visible alternative to RSS and would allow me the opportunity to use Daily Motion the same way I use Twhirl – as a method of following people of interest in an ambient, casual manner.

Is Daily Motion the Next Big Thing in video? I’ve no idea. This market is moving so rapidly it is very difficult to tell what will happen next. But as a service that could have broad professional appeal, I’m thinking this makes an excellent introduction to this new media.
