If you’ve not heard of RSS, you’re in the majority

by Dennis Howlett on January 22, 2008

Yesterday I spoke with Ed Kless of Sage US who is one of the leading lights in the Verasage Institute. He told me that at a recent session with a group of CPAs, hardly anyone had heard of RSS and didn’t know it’s integrated right into Outlook 2007.

We talked further about the US professional market and how up to speed they are with the newer technologies. Sadly, it seems the US market is no less moribund than the UK.

When I think of the US, I tend to think forward thinking, innovation. It seems that outside the Silicon Valley tech bubble, nothing could be further from the truth – at least as far as the profession’s concerned. That’s incredibly depressing.

  • You should really disabuse yourself of the notion that the US would be way more advanced. I dunno if one country's more 'with it' than another across-the-board. Higher percentages, maybe.

I did an informal poll with an audience of about 300 HR folks. I would say about 1/3rd knew and used RSS. We have a long way to go.

This is scary. It is true.

50% of my blof traffic is now RSS. But they are a savvy bunch. I'm doing some stuff with academics right now - and they have no clue about RSS, blogs, wikis, knowledge management....

It's very surreal. But then one academic I work with has never opened Excel and creates tables in Word using tabs.

There is a massive IT divide out there. It's a little but an age thing. But it's more than that.

  • A would expect a CIO to know what RSS is, but not everyone. Others in the organisation are more likely to know about Attensa/Newsgator or Blogs.

A product/company that the CIO should know about however is RSSBus as that could be very useful in the Enterprise for processing, aggregating and channeling RSS, not that the others need to understand it of course.

  • a bit scary, seeing as RSS is the glue of enterprise 2.

However, last time I checked, nearly all of the FTSE 100 and US blue chips had RSS in some form or another. Some of it located in the footer (!) or with non-standard icons, but available nonetheless
  • I think you've hit a nail on the head squarely here...
I attribute that to your being the sort who surrounds himself with those who are also technologically inclined.
We tend to receive positive amplified feedback when our groups consist of those we meet through the medium. If I meet my friends online, using the latest tools, and prefer to spend time following those who can clue me in to the latest and best tools - then I'm bound to meet ever increasing circles of people who are of like mind.
Meanwhile, those who are not of similar bent aren't in those circles reminding us that they are out there.

    Usually anyways.
