I’d prefer a root canal filling

by Dennis Howlett on July 30, 2008

Pinching and parodying a line from Vinnie seems appropriate having spent the last day and night clearing email. I returned to over 350 emails. OK, so 129 relate to a project on which I’m working and don’t really need reading. But even so, clearing out the dross was tiresome (that got about 150 done pretty quickly) but the remainder were a slog.

The problem is that despite Luis Suarez’s exhortation to kick email into touch, the fact is it’s a part of what I have to manage.  Some stuff I could consign to RSS feeds but that doesn’t really solve the problem as I’ve still got to at least skim the darned stuff. Most of the stuff I needed to look at required some sort of action and that’s where things get screwy. It’s not like I can simply dash off a few words. Often I’ve got to check or review something. In one case I had to re-write something. Another required me to lend an encouraging hand and yet another kick started a chain of calls that ended up with this post. So many things are time critical and as Hugh has said many times: people don’t scale.

Oh – and please don’t ask me to consider the 4 hour work week. That’s just nuts. Or for those that can afford (and trust) an army of assistants.

In other news, I can thoroughly recommend the Alcadima Hotel in Lanjaron. The website doesn’t do it justice so check these Flickr pics.

It's why my laptop went with me a fortnight

    a) I can't help blogging

    b) It would have been 1,000 mails on my return I estimate. OK, 600 may have been deleted pretty rapidly, but it was easy to tick the rest off as I went than get stressed about the return home

    Sad, but true

And coming back has been pretty productive as a result

    Best
