Sir David Tweedie: unbowed

by admin on August 11, 2008

in General

One of the rare advantages of travel is the opportunity to pick up an English newspaper. This morning’s Spanish edition of the Daily Telegraph had a profile of Sir David Tweedie who according to the article is: “The most hated accountant in Britain and the World.”  I wouldn’t go THAT far but his almost complete lack of IT knowledge beggars belief.

At the time the now (nearly) defunct IR39 was being debated, it was clear that Tweedie hadn’t thought through the implications of turning the notion of ‘fair value’ into an algorithm. But as he says in relation to IR39′s bastard brother FRS17: “My job is to make people know what they are doing.” That may be so but I do wish that Tweedie, who prefers notions of transparency than opaqueness, would give some thought to how these things get played out in today’s business process oriented world.

Here’s the online version of the original article.

You underplay your hand

If Tweedie had considered an algorithm he would have had to consider the down side of fair value and the possibility that it might compound losses.

There is little evidence that he did

His lack of forethought ahs had enormous damaging impact on the real world

And he's still in office. Why is that?
