While stuck in Madrid airport, I tuned into the Friday Morning Report (FMR) run by Craig Cmehil. The topic du jour was ‘Jet Lag” and the ensuing conversation was hilarious. It’s one of those ‘you had to be there’ times but even so, the replay should provide enough flavour to get a sense of the general lunacy that ensued. Goodness knows what the other people hanging out in the Iberia business class lounge thought as I broke out into hysterical laughter from time to time.
Craig’s one of my favourite people. He has one of the toughest jobs on the planet: evangelising the SAP Community of over 1 million developers and 300,000+ business process experts. It might sound like a dream job but it inevitably includes sorting out errant contributors, acting as a shoulder upon which to cry and being the general focus of any discontent. All the same, Craig manages to keep his cool and still finds time to write code.
I have a particular fondness for Craig ever since he opened my eyes to the world of geekdom. Huh? Last year at SAP TechEd, Craig invited me to hacker night. That’s where geeks get together, demonstrate and play with code. As a ‘suit’ it’s not my thing – or at least I thought not. It was one of the best fun experiences I can recall. A year on and it has led me down all sorts of paths, including engaging in a community driven project that promises to yield interesting results in the next few weeks.
This is what Vinnie Mirchandani had to say when they met for the first time last week:
He is always experimenting with development, social, community collaboration other tools – whether invented at SAP or not. The start-up geek who is not constrained by corporate focused development organization.
Anyhoo – in a post show Twittering session, Nigel James suggested moving FMR to 11 am CET rather than 9.15 am. It gets my vote. Much more civilised.
