Smug mug

If you pore through past pages of AccountingWeb on the saas issue you’ll see many occasions where John Stokdyk tells me that it will be years before saas takes hold. Look through these pages and you’ll see me pushing back. It is therefore with some satisfaction and an unashamedly smug look that I quote from today’s AccountingWeb editorial:

Some of the winners in the Software Satisfaction Awards didn’t exist when the scheme first started in 2006, but the successes of software as a service (SaaS) providers this year demonstrated that a new generation of business systems has well and truly arrived.

I’ll be at the AccountancyAge awards next week. There isn’t a category for saas players. Even so, I’m going to be tapping John for a beer. I reckon he owes me one. ;)

Not so fast there, Dennis.

As someone who literally grew up around the timesharing industry, I have never quibbled much with the arguments for SaaS, but always reported, accurately, that AccountingWEB.co.uk members weren't interested - yet.

I still think there's a long, long way to go for SaaS suppliers to overcome accountants' technological conservatism - but the instant I found evidence of a significant shift, I reported it. Perhaps that's the difference between us. You have taken up a position as cheerleader and champion for SaaS while I am much more concerned with covering what my readers tell me they are interested in.

There's room enought on the internet for both approaches - and the tensions between our two world views can sometimes make for stimulating arguments.

Meanwhile, I've had enough of awards ceremonies for this year and won't be going to the Age do - so you'll have to wait a wee while longer before you get a beer out of me.

Cheers and have a good time.
John

@john - shame about tomorrow, it would have been good to catch up. On the cheerleader front - yes - there is a certain amount of that but you'd be surprised how cautious I am in comparison to some of my colleagues. Even so, I disagree on the 'what readers say they want to hear' angle. I've found that readers don't know what they know until they know and one of the functions I like to fulfill is that of educator about what is available. But yes - there is room for all views. Keep 'em coming.

Dennis

It's good to be smug sometimes

It may be the only reward you get!

Hey Dennis,

Nice to see your predictions coming true and hitting the naysayers where it hurts.

Same with open source - everybody is dismissing it then, bam, it'll be mainstream and they'll scramble to be on the 'wagon.

Keep up the irreverence ;-)

Martyn
