I just received my Dopplr annual report for 2008. It doesn’t make for pretty reading. According to Dopplr I traveled for 61 days om 20 trips, spewing 11.98 metric tonnes of CO2 in the process.
A few observations:
- According to Dopplr, I didn’t travel January and most of February but I know that’s not true.
- When I add on the recovery time, especially from trips to the US, then I can easily add another 20 days to that tally.
- I’m pretty certain I didn’t record all trips to Dopplr until later in the year when there was an auto-update facility from my calendar but I’d have to think very hard to remember those it’s missed.
- I’m horrified to see that my travel based carbon footprint alone is more than a Hummer H3 4WD produces in a year.
- I can confidently predict that I will not be traveling ANYTHING like as much in 2009. All of which will please Jude a great deal.
- Many of the companies I have visited are/will be getting telepresence religion this year.
When the stats are put in sharp relief as Dopplr has done, it really makes you stop and think. Face time is important but is it really worth close to 12 tonnes of CO2 a year?
