My Dopplr 2008

I just received my Dopplr annual report for 2008. It doesn’t make for pretty reading. According to Dopplr I traveled for 61 days om 20 trips, spewing 11.98 metric tonnes of CO2 in the process.

A few observations:

  • According to Dopplr, I didn’t travel January and most of February but I know that’s not true.
  • When I add on the recovery time, especially from trips to the US, then I can easily add another 20 days to that tally.
  • I’m pretty certain I didn’t record all trips to Dopplr until later in the year when there was an auto-update facility from my calendar but I’d have to think very hard to remember those it’s missed.
  • I’m horrified to see that my travel based carbon footprint alone is more than a Hummer H3 4WD produces in a year.
  • I can confidently predict that I will not be traveling ANYTHING like as much in 2009. All of which will please Jude a great deal.
  • Many of the companies I have visited are/will be getting telepresence religion this year.

When the stats are put in sharp relief as Dopplr has done, it really makes you stop and think. Face time is important but is it really worth close to 12 tonnes of CO2 a year?

  • That is a great service from Dopplr. As you may know, I have been graphing my electricity use at home using a current cost meter. This data gets saved on and offline in a few different places, including pachube.com. They have recently setup a carbon footprint app that they are trialing out that uses the current cost data to calculate the carbon foot print. Not entirely sure what to do with the carbon data at the moment tho.

Although the graphs look pretty basic, they have an API and i have created an air app that allows you to get some quite good detail into your own charts, formatted they way you like. Maybe pachube could tap into the dopplr api to do the same.
  • I just downloaded my Dopplr report yesterday too! I used 6,229kg of CO2 this year, traveled for 103 days across 19 trips for 52,375km.
