Last week I bemoaned my 2008 travel, stats provided courtesy of Dopplr. This week my pal Pat Phelan announces a deal between his company MaxRoam and Dopplr.
MaxRoam promises to save you telco roaming charges. Here is a table of rates but as an example: a cell to cell call from France to the UK will cost 48p per minute. That beats the crap out of most providers but as with all these things, rates are always being juggled. I use MaxRoam and it does a decent job on calls, especially when I’m traveling in the US. I use Boingo for data.
In this deal Dopplr is reselling MaxRoam SIM chips at €45 which includes €40 pre-paid. We’ll reach a point where the SIM is given away but when I recall the SIM cost €25 eurio when it was first introduced, it’s easy to see how fast this market is moving.
