Saas scorecard

in Cloud Computing/SaaS,General

We’re part way through the reporting season for US based software vendors. I’m paying attention to the big players like SAP and Microsoft but also keeping an eye out for how the saas vendors are performing. In the last few days we’ve heard from talent management specialist SuccessFactors, CRM provider RightNow and most recently from saas suite provider NetSuite. All are doing well.

All are reporting high levels of growth and looking forward to a bright 2009. This is in sharp contrast to the mega vendors which are best characterized by layoffs, lack of visibility into the future and declining or negative growth in software sales.

Results from each of the vendors help us understand the dynamics of their market segment and where money is being spent. It seems that despite the recession, the on-demand/saas model is proving surprisingly popular, especially among SMB companies that need to upgrade or which are switching to lower costs.

We should not forget that each of these companies is relatively small in the scale of things and so high levels of growth would be expected at this stage of the cycle. Even so, there is plenty to be happy about.

My detailed take on each of the companies can be found through these links:

RightNow – comes home strong

SuceessFactors – some questions on firing 22% of its staff despite strong results and good outlook

NetSuite – looking strong for 2009
