I occasionally mention Severn Delta, Martyn Shiner and Clive Birnie‘s manufacturing company. They’re building a business of making and selling kitchen cloths out of a bankrupt organization. It’s not a stretch to say money is tight. When it came to using ERP software, Martyn found the company had been burned by its old packaged application supplier and there wasn’t any money to go out and invest. That’s zero budget. The solution?
Develop your own ERP built upon open source components supported by an on-demand framework created by Senokian, the companyt behind TactileCRM.
In this video, Martyn – a CIMA accountant and Clive discuss the background, what they’ve done and the results. They’re live, it’s been in production for 3 months and it is working. Where they go to next is an open question but I’d like to see them offer this back to the open source community so that they can benefit from an expanded developer base.
Prior to our discussion, Martyn gave me a brief demonstration of the solution. It is extensive and has a similar look and feel to Salesforce.com although tailored to their operations. He ran the service over the Internet via a wifi connection, tunneling through to the company’s VPN. That means real-time, anywhere connectivity.

The screenshots give you a taste of what they’ve achieved in 18 months of development. Oh – he was running the system to a browser on a Netbook…how mad is that?
