Dan

The institutes that charge us a membership fee are certainly not though leaders. At most their actions are late-to-the-party lobbyists. Nor, when dominated by the big 4, would one expect them to show any desire for change, or challenge.

My money was always on kpmg to go first. I understood they were the audiors to 19 of the 31 failed banks as at 30/11/08.

GM and the rest of the car industry did not see what was coming, and the US govt. simply pointed the lemmings to the cliff edge by offering better subsidies on that pathway. Toyota nearly got there.

If some more accountants were brave, entrepreneurial, or business-minded, then a group of them would join together and split away from the big 4 and join the ranks of the 5 to 20th places. However, big business is totally risk avers, and seems unwilling to support the medium sized firms.

You could probably create a big 5 firm tomorrow by simply inviting all the un-employed ones to a party in the City.

How about internal auditors opine on the statements and are inspected/regulated by the PCAOB or another body? (SEC in the US and/or for US-listed companies?) Since the 'independence' of external auditors is questionable, might as well put it all on the table.

Additionally, more disclosure about a company's internal audit methodology, and even the individuals within the department's credentials and experience might provide assurance that the statements are up to snuff.

As an aside, how did you manage to get the retweets into the comments? Wordpress plugin?
