kashflow VAT

Now we all know that Duane Jackson, MD and resident comedian at Kashflow likes his little jokes but when I saw the image above, based on this Tweet message:

check out the icon we’re using for VAT on the KashFlow settings page – http://bit.ly/rp2fK : )

I had to go: tsk tsk and shake my head slowly.

Note to Duane: VAT is a tax you collect from others so no-one’s swagging it from you. That’s offset by the VAT you pay and can lead to refunds of tax paid. So how the heck do we end up with an icon of a burglar? I’m sure he’ll think of a PR spin on this faux pas. ‘Tax man forces us to burgle customer bank accounts’ perhaps?

  • Of course, the taxman only burgles you when you let him :) Let me run your business for a while, and you won't have a tax problem !!

about time developers started to make their software easier to use. Financial software is one of the worst culprits for unintuitive software - so Duane is clearly a genius in the making!
  • What's this got to do with 'easier to use?' Taking a swipe at HMRC on something that implies something that might confuse is hardly genius. Funny yes.
  • alastair
why do you think its taking a swipe? perhaps you are getting too sensitive in your old age.
  • The hilarious thing here is that the robber icon is just the sort of off-the-wall stunt that Dennis would use (but in a different setting obviously)

I'm starting to think that most of the tension between Duane and Dennis is because they're birds of a feather.... hell, they even look similar.

Be nice to Uncle Dennis, Duane

    ;-)
  • Look like him? That's libel. I've instructed my lawyers.
  • Quite - you're the pretty one, I'm smarter ;)
  • Boys, boys, boys!!!

  • @ben: When you can read my mind, you will be 1st in line for a job as my road manager. I promise you'll make a fortune. ;)

I think the icon is spot on! Agreed VAT is collected from our customers... but sooner or later WE are the customer and have to cough up. Here's two examples for everyone who thinks the tax man does not deserve this icon:-

Petrol is subject to fuel duty and THEN VAT is added, so in this case - your paying TAX on TAX!

And a slightly longer winded example - You work all your life, you pay income tax in your wages, you buy a house, you pay stamp duty, you die and then you (well, your estate) pay inheritance tax. So the money flowing through "the system" for just 1 persons house has been taxed 3 times!!
  • Your last para states a common and erroneous misconception.
  • Paul
You wanna clarify which bit is wrong?
  • You pay income tax on what you earn as a part way of funding the things you love like the NHS, police, most of education and many other services civil society expects for its citizens. Stamp duty may (or may not) be payable but is graduated depending on your choice of property price range. Your estate may or may not pay IHT but that's dependent on value that has nothing to so with any effort on your part and isn't just to do with property so where's the complaint?
  • I totally agree. It's an inappropriate image for VAT for the reason you state above. The worst that can be said about VAT is that we're unpaid tax collectors for HMRC.

I guess the reason for the image is tapping into the general feeling that people are being "robbed by the tax man" - not VAT specifically.

Regardless of how apt the image is, it got retweeted to a few tens of thousands of people on Twitter within minutes and got us free advert on AccManPro. So I can't see it being a Bad Thing.

I only wish I'd linked to a blog post with it rather than just to the image so we could have converted more of that traffic into sales.
  • ;) next you'll be telling me that Crunch's 'off' advice is good marketing as well. lol.
