Someone got it wrong

by Dennis Howlett on August 24, 2009

This from ecademy turned up in my alerts:

Everyone seems to be jostling for position amongst the thought leaders of Social Media. Watching the World Athletics Championships on telly I’m reminded of the middle distance races where the top runners are gathering, waiting for their moment to step out from the crowd.

So who are those front runners. Who are the bloggers upon whose word we should all hang if we want to know what lies ahead of the curve?

I decided to do a fairly crude google search using the word string Social Media Thought Leader and the first two items both listed comments from what were described as the current mavens of this fascinating field.

Here are the names:

Item 1

Robert Scoble, Jeremiah Owyang, Andrew McAfee, J.P. Rangaswami, Hugh McLeod, Dennis Howlett, Shel Israel, Stowe Boyd, Chris Brogan, Chuck Hollis, Sam Lawrence.

Are you kidding me? Since when did I ‘do’ Social Media? I more than anyone finds the term repulsive. I guess Google’s search algorithm doesn’t recognize that part of my thinking. Having said that, with the exception of Chuck, I know all these folk personally – some better than others. A fine crew they are too. Each has strengths and a different lens to bring to the world of social computing. I still don’t know how on earth Google search manages to put me in this group.

Please – no smart ass answers…

  • It just goes to show the power of your SEO optimization strategy, Dennis! Unfortunately Teh Google isn't smart enough. The proximity of your name and a sentence with the words "social media" is Definitive Proof as far as search engines are concerned.

But yeah. You are a Social Media Thought Leader. It's just that your thoughts lead you to a *different* conclusion about the whole social media universe.

  • Regardless of what you might call it Dennis, your style, approach, contributions and subject matter would seem to fit the criteria to be described by others under that banner.
