If you’ve never seen Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle when he’s on good form then this video shot at the Churchill Club is definitely one to watch. Here he talks about the fashion industry that tech really is: “Last year it was saas, this year it’s cloud…It’s like Chanel, last year it was fuchsia, this year it’s puce…We’ve been doing this for 10 years.” Priceless stuff. Yeah – and guess what? He’s got a point. As an aside, it’s why I sometimes use expressions like saas/on-demand/cloud or SOC for short. Who the heck knows what it will be in another year’s time? I’m sure some marketing dude will think of something. Hopefully beginning with a ‘K.’
It’s also one reason why I really detest ’social media’ and ’social networking’ as though it’s something brand spanking new. Some of the ideas behind the tech might be new-ish. They’re trying to address a well understood problem that’s been on management minds for years – without success. Anyhoo – enough of my ranting…enjoy the 5 minute video and if you ever get the chance to meet Larry then grab it with both hands. Despite his reputation for being the ‘evil one’ of Silicon Valley, he’s charming and amusing in equal measure.
Hat tip to Venture Beat.
