Music, math, geeks and pros

by Dennis Howlett on December 17, 2009

This is completely off topic but heh, we’re into the festive season so posts here might not just be off topic but erratic as well. Hang on – before clicking away you might just find something interesting towards the end.

If you’re a geek or a professional services person chances are you’ll be something of a mathematician. If that’s true then chances are also that you recognize the connection between math and music. So when I received a random email about the Eigenharp I was curious. Having heard the impromptu whacked out version of the Bond theme on YouTube it suddenly struck me: the Eigenharp looks like the musician’s Swiss Army knife on geeked out steroids. Check this Tweet. Or how about this one?

Curious to learn more, I trawled through the YouTube related content and stumbled across Kayla Kavanagh who’s been playing with the Pico, an entry level Eigenharp. Who? I’d never heard of this person either. Check out the website and you’ll see she’s on Twitter, Facebook and has her own YouTube channel. That’s the uber-geek new business marketing combination to which musicians are rapidly adapting. Professionals are going to need learn how to live with that sort of combination or end up destroyed by those that ‘get it.’

Kayla suffers from BPD or Borderline Personality Disorder. Don’t ask me but I know a good amount about this issue and that got me interested in learning more about this person. Like many others, Kayla doesn’t wear her disability as a badge on which to pour pity. Instead she offers it as an explanation for some of the things about which she sings and the way she goes about creating her art. What’s not to admire about that?

For those that are wondering about the connection to what AccMan’s about, check out this video. See how the old (violin/flute/dulcimer) is mixed with the new (looped electronics) to create something new and refreshing. Wish I could say the same about some tech vendors or firms I run across. (You know who you are.)

Bonus points for the video at the top of this post where she’s playing the Pico in a completely different style to other things I’ve heard her perform. More bonus points for her YT channel which has some music I personally find enthralling.

If you enjoy then check out her music channel.

Endnote: If you’d like one person’s take on BPD then check out this thoughtful article from Mark Easton.

Final note (rendered in the key of A – sic.) My friend Hugh MacLeod often talks about the pain of creating art. Seeing the range of Kayla’s accomplishments tiedinto something I’d never heard of let alone seen before adds a new dimension that I hope some readers will find inspiring. Enjoy the links.
