David Maister: retired

There’s a bit of an old joke: management consultants never die, they simply run out of things to say. Who ever would think they retire?

When I first started this blog David Maister was one of the go to people I enjoyed reading and with whom I had many a lively conversation. He is without question one of the true masters of management consulting for the legal profession and occasionally had a dabble in the accounting world. There are enough similarities for his words to apply equally to us accounting types. The other day I found he has retired. On his blog:

After traveling the world almost non-stop for these past three decades, my wife, Kathy and I are delighted to begin exploring our own home town of Boston. Already we have found lots of fabulous arts events and have joined classes and discussion groups together – although I will confess that it’s a little strange being the class participant rather than the instructor! Together with playing lots of bridge, I am finding myself fully occupied.

So, many thanks to those who have followed and supported my work. Good luck for 2010 and the many years beyond.

Of course the great thing about this media is that even though David has bowed out, we can all still benefit from his passion for the client. In that sense, he will be with us for years to come. If not then Google’s cache will bring back his pearls of wisdom.

Enjoy your retirement David. It is more than well deserved. I hope that when I reach the same end point I’ll recognize it.
