Implementation lessons are invaluable to both learn and avoid common mistakes. Earlier this week I met with Unit 4 customers to discuss implementations, challenges and learnings. In this 5 min 19 secs video, Neil Morling, group finance director of EC Harris, a £300 million built asset consultancy, describes some of the challenges of implementing a global rollout of Agresso, including the need to train 1,800 staff.
Mike Krigsman, one of my ZDnet colleagues, talks about the reasons underpinning implementation failures. I’ve not seen him say much about internal communications. In the video Neil provides colour on this oft forgotten and poorly managed aspect, indicating that it is far from easy to strike the right balance between communicating adequately and timing it in such a way that knowledge transfer works smoothly. Neil also repeats a mantra I regularly hear – give yourself plenty of time. It is excellent advice.
What also comes across loud and clear is that past experience is important in helping build confidence of successful outcomes.
