The man who doesn't sleep

Some people think of me as the man who doesn’t sleep. Last night was certainly one of those occasions.

Once again I found (or rather was told about) problems with AccMan. It seems some security issues have arisen and now I am faced with a massive backup and restore problem. All part of life’s rich tapestry you might think but no fun when you’ve accumulated over 3,200 posts, &,000+ comments, attachments and goodness knows what else.

Unfortunately, WordPress (which provides the backbone for AccMan) does not have a graceful way of importing what amounts to 15MB of data. Instead, it has to be broken up into bite sized pieces and even then it chokes on more than 120 or so entries, requiring continued refreshes. Not much fun I have to say.

Anyhoo – look forward to more service outages while I work through and resolve the problems. In the meantime, I am stoking up on coffee ;)

I knew you must not sleep!

Many Wordpress plugins are poorly written. Prior to go live testing, it is vital to ensure there are no conflicts.

No proper backup and restore procedures? Good thing you dont provide online saas services ;)

Very funny. As it happens I DO have backups etc but the outage has nothing to do with whether I have backups. It turns out that a security setting change at the ISP (which was not notified to me) has been preventing any access to the site including the admin panel although I could get FTP access. I"m told it's because of caching conflicts.

Really sorry to learn about your blog's tech problems. Total bummer. Should I start praying that I don't have similar problems since we use WordPress for http://InFullBloom.us? Are there things we should know about in advance to avoid problems?

Crikey Dennis - don't you just love technology! Even in the web 2.0 world, stuff goes wrong and screws up your life. Of course we in the software industry never experience such issues... (I wish!)Fingers crossed that it remains stable now...!
