Next stop London – again!

in Cloud Computing/SaaS

I feel  like a bloody yo-yo. I reckon I’ve spent more time in London the last few weeks than in the previous year. This time I’m attending a NetSuite gig. As you read this I am probably on the road to Malaga airport which is rapidly becoming a second home.

The event promises to be interesting given they are rolling out the following:

Saideep Raj, Partner, Accenture Global SaaS Practice
Daniel King, CTO, Lloyd’s Register
Beat Neuhaus, Vice President Global Services Operations, Siemens
Markus Küpper, Senior Director GCS Operations, Software AG
David Foster, COO, M62 Visual Communications

From what I can gather, NetSuite is putting on quite a media show but what interests me is in discovering how firms like Accenture are going to make money in this game. Accenture is normally associated with big ticket implmentations and given that NetSuite has made inroads to incumbent players based upon having a lower cost saas/cloud alternative then it will be fascinating to hear what they have to say.

Equally interesting will be the view from the cheque payers and especially Software AG which partners with SAP for key business process components. It raises all sorts of questions about how Software AG is evolving its business applications landscape, how on-premise and cloud applications co-exist and so on. In turn, SAP has been trying to get its Business ByDesign solution into the market.

Then we have Siemens which is both a customer and partner with SAP. It too has significant investments in saas/cloud solutions and especially in the talent management area with SuccessFactors.

For practitioners who are looking at this space for their mid-market customers, there is plenty to think about. I’ll see what I can catch on video…

My million dollar question is the same. Where to typical consulting firms make money consulting on Netsuite or any SaaS. The main answer that I seem to hear from the early firms that are in this space providing consulting is that Netsuite/etc is the tool not the end product for driving revenues.

For two years I’ve seen presentations at the IT Alliance and both times when consultants were asked to give testimonials on how they were using SaaS it was clear that they used SaaS to help manage portfolio companies (one was a VC) and not as a separate service offering.

I have some thoughts on this plus some resources I’ll share a bit later…
