TypePad hosed again – out for 7 hours and counting

by Dennis Howlett on May 3, 2006

Announcement from SixApart:

Since approximately 4:00 pm Pacific Daylight Time, Six Apart has been the victim of a sophisticated distributed denial of service attack. This has affected all of Six Apart’s sites, causing intermittent and limited availability for TypePad, LiveJournal, TypeKey, sixapart.com, movabletype.org and movabletype.com. Our network operations staff is working around the clock with our Internet access providers to resolve the issue. We appreciate your patience and support, and will provide updates as we have them.

In short – we’re hosed on all hosted service. During the night I was receiving emails from 6A customers, I couldn’t reach a whole load of sites and have just received further confirmation the service has either been spotty or totally hosed. I am so glad I don’t use their data centre provider.

Last time there was an outtage of this kind, I moved platforms saying at the time:

The reason I bailed was because I discovered that 6As failure was as a result of the way in which they were doing the disk/DB swap – amateur hour I’m afraid.

A lot of people were ticked off.

UPDATE: Normal service resumed and an update per this link

  • I use Typepad and it's okay. The support team have been very helpful and the monthly cost is no big deal.

It's never good news when things go wrong, but go wrong they do. As yet I have never had a problem (some of us sleep at night Dennis!). The key thing for me is that my blog is not mission critical so I can afford to be reasonably relaxed.

If I make a comparison, most SME’s do not have great IT systems and I suspect Typepad’s application downtime of 7 hours in 5 months is significantly better than most SME’s actually achieved. I would certainly think their backups are better maintained. That said my Blog expectations are rising and if I'm not happy in the future I'll stop the monthly payment and move elsewhere.
